U.S.S. Olympia Underway for the Last Time

U.S.S. Olympia (as ex-IX 40), still in her haze grey paint, being pushed by tugs to her new home in Philadelphia, September 1957. She is about to pass under the Walt Whitman Bridge. Keystone Shipyard, the rebuilder, entered bankruptcy and likely just painted over rust, according to author Benjamin Franklin Cooling. During the rebuild her port engine was dismantled and went missing. But 100,000 visitors toured the ship in 1958. Here you can see her gun batteries are missing. Her eight-inch gun turrets were rebuilt with just iron pipes.
