"Gilded scrollwork with the name "Olympia" for the stern and similiar work enclsoing a bronze female figurehead with an eagle with unspread wings ornamented the bow. Alvan C. Nye of the Hayden Company in New York made these ornaments from the torpedo ports carried by the vessel at Manila Bay and from additional metal furnished by the manufacturer. Noted sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens had rendered the design commemorating the victory at Manila Bay. It almost seemed a throwback to similiar embellishment of ships in the heroic age of sail." — from USS Olympia: Herald of Empire by Benjamin Franklin Cooling.
